From the Blog

In this article on therapy for men, we examine masculinity, emotional health, and why many men struggle silently with anxiety, depression, anger, or shame. We discuss what sometimes prevents men from seeking therapy and how therapy can help men build steadiness, awareness, and deeper resilience. Learning to regulate - rather than suppress - anger, anxiety, shame is often the first step in effective anxiety therapy, depression therapy, and relationship focused therapy.

Most of us were never taught how to regulate our emotions. We were taught how to behave, how to perform, how to be polite, but not how to stay connected to ourselves when fear, anger, sadness, or shame surge through the body. Yet emotion regulation is not a personality trait. It is a trainable neurobiological capacity. In anxiety therapy, we often begin by helping people connect to their bodies instead of fighting to override anxious thoughts and feelings.

One of the most subtle, and most exhausting, patterns in relationships is the unconscious belief that we are responsible for how the other person feels. Many of us learn this early. We learn to read the room, anticipate moods, smooth over tension, and prevent discomfort. Over time, this can start to feel like love - especially in long-standing partnerships where patterns have gone unexamined. In my work providing relationship therapy in Pittsburgh, I often see how these dynamics quietly shape couples over decades.
